Sailing to success in the 2019 Little Britain Challenge

The property and construction industry's no.1 regatta in Cowes brings together hundreds of people from our industry to sail, socialise and fund-raise. Cordless was delighted to be part of the sponsorship of the first ever all-female crew in the history of the event.

Cordless Business Development Executive, Evelyn Hogan, gives a first-hand account of this year’s Little Britain in the Isle of Wight from 13-14 September.

“Little Britain was an experience of a lifetime. Our crew, named ‘The Cool AF’ (short for the cool all-female crew) was made up of an amazing group of girls from across our industry – some of them I already knew and the rest I would soon get to know! We arrived in Cowes the day before racing began, full of anticipation, nerves and excitement. First up was meeting our Skipper, Karen and her First Mate, Hattie before we got straight down to business to check the weather, learn the ropes and get some practice in. Time to get out of the frying pan and into the fire!

To start with I felt completely out of my comfort zone and it was testing, both mentally and physically, but we rose to the challenge, pulling together to support each other. I was soon nicknamed ‘The Gazelle’ due to my newfound capacity to leap between port and starboard to pull ropes. Wherever you are, even when parallel to the water on one side of the boat, you need to keep your wits about you and be ready to move another way. Fast.

The first night we got an early night, ready for the racing to begin the next morning. We got off to a great start, by coming 3rd in our first race. Go girls! The bond that we all had with each other was incredible from plaiting each other’s hair in the mornings through to the action on deck. Our subsequent races saw us rank 5th in our group, earning 13th place out of 32 boats racing over the weekend, which was an unbelievable achievement. Although we didn’t win the cup, we won skills and bonds that we will carry with us for lifetime.

Thank you to all the organisers, the companies that sponsored us and last but not least, my fellow crew members.

It feels awesome to have made history within such a special community and we can’t wait until next year – who knows, we may even have two all-female boats running!”
